- Ambiguity and the dialogical self: In search for a dialogical psychologyPublication . Ferreira, Tiago; Salgado, João; Cunha, CarlaIt is intuitively felt that ambiguity plays a crucial role in human beings’ everyday life and in psychologists’ theoretical and applied work. However, ambiguity remains essentially non-problematised in psychological science since its foundation. This article analyses positivist and social constructionist perspectives on ambiguity in the context of their epistemological and ontological fundamental assumptions. The relational thesis of social constructionism is further analysed and it is argued that it constitutes a “weak thesis” concerning the relational constitution of human beings. In the second part, a dialogical alternative is elaborated. In this perspective, ambiguity is placed in the context of relationship and both are brought to an ontological ground. Therefore, it is argued, ambiguity is a fundamental property of human experience and plays a fundamental role in the constitution of (inter)subjective processes. The impact of this thesis on dialogical perspective on self is elaborated.

- Brief assessment of depression: Psychometric properties of the Portuguese version of the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9)Publication . Ferreira, Tiago; Sousa, Marlene; Salgado, João: The lack of knowledge regarding psychometric characteristics of brief scales for assessing the severity of symptoms of depression for the Portuguese population limits the ability of health professionals to signal clinically relevant situations, as well as the implementation of alternative forms of mental health care. The Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) is a scale whose usefulness in various professional contexts has been amply demonstrated by research. However, some of its psychometric qualities remain unknown for the Portuguese version.

- Immersion and distancing across the therapeutic process: relationship to symptoms and emotional arousalPublication . Barbosa, Eunice; Amendoeira, Maria; Ferreira, Tiago; Teixeira, Ana Sofia; Pinto-Gouveia, José; Salgado, JoàoThis study aims to clarify the roles of immersion and distancing (that is, reflection on an experience from an egocentric point of view or as an observer, respectively) on therapeutic change analyzing i) the evolution of these two perspectives across the resolution of a clinical problem, and ii) the relationship between immersion/distancing with symptoms and emotional arousal. We extracted all the passages of speech pertaining to the most relevant clinical problem of a good outcome case of depression undergoing cognitive-behavioral therapy. We assessed the distancing/immersion of these extracts using the Measure of Immersed and Distanced Speech, and emotional arousal with the Client Emotional Arousal Scale-III. The symptoms were assessed from the Beck Depression Inventory-II and Outcome Questionnaire-10.2. Immersion was associated with symptoms and negative emotions, while distancing was associated with clinical well being and positive emotions. Immersion was still dominant when depressive symptoms were below the clinical threshold. Clinical change was associated with a decrease in immersion and an increase in distancing. The dominance of immersion does not necessarily indicate a bad outcome.

- NARRATIVE AND IMAGE: METAPHORS OF THE DIALOGICAL SELF AND THE PROBLEM OF SPATIALITYPublication . Ferreira, Tiago; Meira, LilianaRuck and Slunecko (2008) present a proposal for a method of investigation of the dialogical self which is based on the potential of the image as a form of self-expression and a privileged means of accessing its structure and relational dynamics. The main objective of the pictorial method is the study of the role of the self’s spatial and temporal dimensions and it seeks to become an alternative tool to methods of a narrative nature, which put stress on the temporal dimension, and which have dominated dialogical self theory at a meta-theoretical and theoretical levels and also at a methodological level. This commentary takes the form of a reflection on the dichotomy inherent to the general argument of the authors: image versus narrative in the dialogical conception of the self. The viability of both narrative and pictorial metaphors, in the description of the dialogicality intrinsic to the processes pertaining to identity is discussed through the difference between narrative/textual/linguistic spatiality and imagery/pictorial/geographic spatiality.

- Screening and Evaluation Platform for Depression and Suicidality in Primary HealthcarePublication . Salgado, João; Cunha, Carla; Ferreira, Tiago; Gomes, Pedro; Sousa, Marlene; Rocha, Artur; Henriques, Ricardo; Costa, Alexandre; Cassola, FernandoThis work presents a screening and evaluation platform for depression and suicidality that has been tested in the scope of primary healthcare. The main objective is to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of screening processes. A web-based, decision support platform was provided for qualified healthcare professionals. The platform provides several assessment tools for patient evaluation and monitoring of their treatment, along with follow up appointment management. A preliminary evaluation process was carried out to understand the health professional’s satisfaction. This revealed there was general satisfaction with its integrated functions and all the provided methods of assessment. In conclusion, the project sustains the goal of improving the treatment outcomes for clinical depression by refining the screening methods and consequently increase the screening effectiveness and efficiency.
