- The (Non)Place of Migration? The European Pillar of Social Rights and the Representations of People with a Migration Background in PortugalPublication . Marques, Joana S.; Martinho, Ana Luisa; Topa, JoanaRecognising migration as a defining feature of contemporary society and politics, this article critically uses the European Pillar of Social Rights (EPSR) as an analytical framework and examines how it relates to migration. Although migration is intrinsically linked to every dimension of the EPSR, we argue that it is largely absent from this framework. Moreover, while existing literature has explored various factors shaping public attitudes toward people with a migration background (PMB) and migration policies, little is known about how PMB represent these issues. Based on 73 semi‐structured interviews conducted in Porto, Portugal, this study fills that gap by analysing their perspectives on EPSR principles and on recent migration policy changes in the country, which have become less inclusive. Our findings show that framing migration as a crisis reinforces material and symbolic borders, which PMB simultaneously contest and internalise.
- Unveiling the Life Journeys of Newly Arrived Immigrant Women in PortoPublication . Topa, Joana; Rusu, Mariana; Pinto, Cláudia; Guimarães, Joana; Silva, Estefânia; Tulekian, Isabelle; Azevedo, Ana Luisa; Vieira, Diana; Martinho, Ana LuisaWith the rising number of women relocating to Portugal over recent years, this paper focuses on the lived experiences of newly arrived migrant women, employing an intersectional lens to examine their integration process. In this qualitative exploratory study, we conducted semi-structured interviews with 28 Central and South American women who migrated to the North of Portugal, analysing their perceptions about their migration and integration experience. Data were analysed using Braun and Clarke’s Thematic Analysis proposal. The findings reveal that these women faced numerous challenges during the integration process, including cultural adaptation difficulties, economic disadvantages, and bureaucratic hurdles. These issues are exacerbated by class, ethnicity, and administrative status, significantly affecting their access to essential services such as housing, employment, healthcare, and social support networks. Participants often navigate the expectations of their new community and those they left behind, illustrating the complex interplay of multiple identities. They often encounter various forms of social discrimination, but despite their increasing presence, they remain underrepresented in national and regional statistics and academic discourse, with their specific needs frequently overlooked in policies and practice.
- Obstetric Violence: Inequalities and Vulnerabilities of Being a Racialised Brazilian Woman During Pregnancy in PortugalPublication . Rusu, Mariana Holanda; Nogueira, Maria da Conceição de Oliveira Carvalho; Topa, Joana BessaThis article presents issues related to obstetric violence (OV) during pregnancy, which affects women all over the world. This form of gender-based violence results in the subordination of women's access to sexual and reproductive health. OV can be defined as disrespect for women's rights during the pregnancy-puerperium cycle, manifesting itself in various ways, such as omission, neglect, physical and psychological violence, sexual abuse, the use of interventions and medications without scientific proof, and the deprivation of basic needs that generate suffering for women. It is a multifaceted practice, present in health institutions and rooted in power relations, which materialises through the manipulation of women's bodies, disrespectful forms of communication, inadequate provision of services and systematic violations of fundamental rights. This practice is often perpetuated by health professionals who exercise power over pregnant women, reflecting the inequality rooted in a patriarchal, monogamous and sexist society. It is thus an example of oppression and control over women, revealing a regime of domination and exploitation. In Portugal, this reality not only affects national women but also accentuates inequalities, especially among racialised Brazilian women. This topic is still invisibilized in the academic and social environment, and this exploratory qualitative study aims to fill this gap. Based on an intersectional feminist epistemology and the approach of social constructionism, the research examines the experiences of OV during pregnancy of these women in the Portuguese National Health System (NHS). The aim is to understand the reality of obstetric violence and its consequences for women, with attention to the intersections of migration and race that heighten their vulnerability. These women often have no social ties or support, and when they cross borders, they face realities marked by discrimination, which intensifies their vulnerability and makes it difficult for them to express their desires and intuitions in an environment that often makes their bodies invisible. This paper seeks to discuss the interrelationships between gender equality, race, and nationality, gathering information that can contribute to the formulation of health management strategies, especially in the care of migrant women during pregnancy in Portugal.
- Sexual Harassment in Institutions of Higher Education: Some Critical Insights Based on the Case of PortugalPublication . Neves, Sofia; Ferreira, Mafalda; Topa, Joana; Silva, Estefânia; Correia, Ariana; Sousa, Mafalda; Borges, JaneteAs Portugal lived under a dictatorship for almost 50 years, policies and legislation on women’s rights began to be developed only after the instauration of democracy in 1975 (Monteiro and Ferreira, 2016). In the second half of the 20th century, especially after the feminist movement gained strength, broader discussions about sexual harassment (SH) in Portugal began to emerge. A greater awareness of SH as a form of gender-based violence and discrimination resulted from the increased consciousness surrounding issues of gender equality and women’s rights during the 1960s and 1970s. In the 80s and 90s, the debate on this issue intensified, driven by social movements and international legislation, such as the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination AgainstWomen (United Nations, 1979), to which Portugal has been a signatory since 1980.
- Perceptions of Adverse Childhood Experiences Among Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex People Victims of Domestic Violence by their Families: A Portuguese Qualitative StudyPublication . Neves, Sofia; Ferreira, Mafalda; Sousa, Edgar; Topa, Joana; Borges, Janete; Vieira, Cristina P.Research shows lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and intersex (LGBTI) people are vulnerable to more adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). The research focused on the perceptions of experiencing ACEs among 36 Portuguese LGBTI people who were exposed to domestic violence by their parents or other family members (M = 34.11; SD = 10.77). Semi-structured individual interviews were conducted and data were subjected to thematic analysis. Results reveal a great exposure to different types of domestic violence, such as psychological, physical and sexual abuse, corrective practices and home expulsion. Affirmative and trauma-informed approaches, especially in counseling, are required to address LGBTI children’s needs.

- Emotion-focused therapy, forgiveness and aging: An integrated aproach to enhancing emotional well-beingPublication . D'Almeida, Bernardo Monteiro Fernandes CorrêaIn recent decades, particularly within the realm of psychology, research has increasingly highlighted the importance of forgiveness in enhancing personal well-being and fostering sociocultural development. Research and clinical practice in this area have expanded considerably. Forgiveness is seen as a response to unjust situations, closely connected to emotional dynamics and their transformative potential. Thus, emphasizing the emotional dimension of forgiveness is crucial. This is one of the reasons why the thesis focuses on Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT) as a therapeutic model. Despite the growing attention to EFT and forgiveness in psychology, certain areas still require further exploration—among them, forgiveness in older adults. Given the distinctive challenges encountered by older adults, alongside the increasing demographic of this population, the beneficial effects of forgiveness on their health become increasingly apparent. The focus of this research is to investigate forgiveness in the older population using EFT to address emotional injuries caused by offenses. This approach aims to fill a gap in current studies and ultimately promote well-being in this demographic.
