In recent decades, there has been an increase in the number of studies on sexual violence against children and adolescents, however, this was the last form of abuse to be studied. This article presents some results from these studies, in particular, concepts, epidemiology, and consequences. We also propose a reflection on the confusion between sexual assault and pedophilia, concluding that there is a consensus among the scientific community that not all sexual perpetrators of children and adolescents are pedophiles and not all pedophiles are sexual perpetrators.pt_PT
