Contemporary literature discusses the impact of working in a correctional environment can have on the professionals who work there. While work environment and stress are
important factors for mental health, this study aims to examine the prevalence of burnout (BO), compassion fatigue (CF), compassion satisfaction (CS), and vicarious trauma (VT)
of the population working with offenders. Following PRISMA guidelines, this systematic literature review (SLR) includes 19 studies published between 2001 and 2023. The
participants included in the samples from the 19 studies include health care workers, protection unit employees, social workers, office workers and correctional officers, prison
mental health nurses, correctional counselors, clinicians, probation/parole officers, and occupational therapists.
