- Progressive Resistance Exercise Training in CKD: A Feasibility StudyPublication . Watson, Emma L.; Greening, Neil J.; Viana, João L.; Aulakh, Jaspreet; Bodicoat, Danielle H.; Barratt, Jonathan; Feehally, John; Smith, Alice C.Skeletal muscle wasting in chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with morbidity and mortality. Resistance exercise results in muscle hypertrophy in the healthy population, but is underinvestigated in CKD. We aimed to determine the feasibility of delivering a supervised progressive resistance exercise program in CKD, with secondary aims to investigate effects on muscle size, strength, and physical functioning.

- The Effects of Different Warm-up Volumes on the 100-m Swimming PerformancePublication . Neiva, Henrique P.; Marques, Mário C.; Barbosa, Tiago M.; Izquierdo, Mikel; Viana, João L.; Teixeira, Ana M.; Marinho, Daniel A.The aim of this study was to compare the effect of 3 different warm-up (WU) volumes on 100-m swimming performance. Eleven male swimmers at the national level completed 3 time trials of 100-m freestyle on separate days and after a standard WU, a short WU (SWU), or a long WU (LWU) in a randomized sequence. All of them replicated some usual sets and drills, and the WU totaled 1,200 m, the SWU totaled 600 m, and the LWU totaled 1,800 m. The swimmers were faster after the WU (59.29 seconds; confidence interval [CI] 95%, 57.98-60.61) and after the SWU (59.38 seconds; CI 95%, 57.92-60.84) compared with the LWU (60.18 seconds; CI 95%, 58.53-61.83). The second 50-m lap after the WU was performed with a higher stroke length (effect size [ES] = 0.77), stroke index (ES = 1.26), and propelling efficiency (ES = 0.78) than that after the SWU. Both WU and SWU resulted in higher pretrial values of blood lactate concentrations [La] compared with LWU (ES = 1.58 and 0.74, respectively), and the testosterone:cortisol levels were increased in WU compared with LWU (ES = 0.86). In addition, the trial after WU caused higher [La] (ES ≥ 0.68) and testosterone:cortisol values compared with the LWU (ES = 0.93). These results suggest that an LWU could impair 100-m freestyle performance. The swimmers showed higher efficiency during the race after a 1200-m WU, suggesting a favorable situation. It highlighted the importance of the [La] and hormonal responses to each particular WU, possibly influencing performance and biomechanical responses during a 100-m race.
- Market exuberance in sovereign credit default swaps: assessing the EU regulatory framework and trading profit opportunitiesPublication . Oliveira, Maria Alberta; Santos, CarlosSovereign credit default swaps (SCDSs) have been at the core of the Euro Area (EA) debt crisis, particularly in its periphery. Both EU politicians and a wide range of EU academics have asked for tighter regulation of these over-thecounter (OTC) derivatives, following similar pressures to the ones that had resulted from the 2008 financial crisis for corporate reference entities. As such, the SCDSs regulatory framework experienced a number of changes from 2009 to 2014, in the EU. This paper provides a seminal assessment on whether these new rules have succeeded in preventing SCDSs exuberance episodes in the EU. Using daily data for 5 years maturity Greek SCDSs, comprising the period between the latest regulatory reform, in September 2014, and mid-March 2015, we find clear evidence of explosive behavior in SCDSs spreads, and even in upfront quotes. The authors take advantage of the new Phillips et al. (2015a, 2015b) test for multiple exuberance episodes, which had rarely been used in derivatives markets, and conduct an event study to conclude that Greek elections, in early 2015, and the associated turmoil has led to a surge in momentum trading, with significant potential returns for SCDSs buyers. The regulatory measures aiming at deleveraging these markets, standardizing contracts, and dissociating sovereign and banking risk, do not seem to have achieved their purposes, as the political and financial anxiety in Greece, starting in December 2014, has led to explosive behaviour episodes in the market for Greek SCDSs, of the type regulators had tried to avoid.

- Inflammatory and Cardiometabolic Risk on Obesity: Role of Environmental XenoestrogensPublication . Teixeira, Diana; Pestana, Diogo; Santos, Cristina; Correia-Sá, Luísa; Marques, Cláudia; Norberto, Sónia; Meireles, Manuela; Faria, Ana; Silva, Ricardo; Faria, Gil; Sá, Carla; Freitas, Paula; Taveira-Gomes, António; Domingues, Valentina; Delerue-Matos, Cristina; Calhau, Conceição; Monteiro, RosárioSome chemicals used in consumer products or manufacturing (eg, plastics, pesticides) have estrogenic activities; these xenoestrogens (XEs) may affect immune responses and have recently emerged as a new risk factors for obesity and cardiovascular disease. However, the extent and impact on health of chronic exposure of the general population to XEs are still unknown.
- Associations Between Early Family Risk, Children’s Behavioral Regulation, and Academic Achievement in PortugalPublication . Cadima, Joana; Gamelas, Ana M.; McClelland, Megan; Peixoto, CarlaThis study examined concurrent associations between family sociodemographic risk, self-regulation, and early literacy and mathematics in young children from Azores, Portugal (N ¼ 186). Family sociodemographic risk was indexed by low maternal education, low family income, and low occupational status. Behavioral aspects of self-regulation were assessed using a direct measure called the Head–Toes–Knees–Shoulders task. Results of structural equation modeling revealed that family sociodemographic risk had significant negative effects on behavioral regulation and academic achievement. Behavioral regulation was positively associated with academic achievement when we adjusted for the influence of family sociodemographic risk and child verbal IQ. Furthermore, behavioral regulation mediated the association between family sociodemographic risk and mathematics achievement. Practice or Policy: The results suggest the detrimental effect of family socioeconomic risk in Portugal and the potential importance of behavioral regulation for school success for Portuguese children
